Maximizing Ergonomics and Productivity for Laptop Users

by C. Sumner

Most laptop users love the flexibility they get from their laptop, but few users realize that their laptops were designed to provide mobility, not ergonomic comfort. Long term use can take its toll on your body. When using your laptop, you need to evaluate your work space in order to maximize comfort and productivity.

Whenever you use a computer, your goal should be to maintain a neutral sitting position. This posture minimizes the strain on your muscles caused from sitting and typing for long periods of time. However, it is impossible to achieve a neutral typing position on a laptop; but a few added gadgets can provide enormous ergonomic benefits. There are three main areas that can help encourage good posture while using a laptop.

Keyboard: For a neutral position, the keyboard should rest just below the height of your elbows and the keys should slope downward slightly away from you, so that your hands can remain in a relaxed position even when reaching for the top keys. By using a separate, wireless mini keyboard with your laptop, you have the flexibility to place the keyboard wherever you can to create a comfortable typing position.

Chair: Next, your feet should rest firmly on the floor, and your chair should provide proper lumbar support without catching you behind the knees. A neutral position allows the muscles in your back, arms, and shoulders to relax while you type. Even when you travel, take the time to adjust your chair height, and consider getting portable lumbar support that you can use anywhere. A rolled up towel can give you a temporary quick fix for back support.

Monitor: Your monitor should rest straight in front of you at eye level, about an arm's length away from your body. This will allow a clear view of the screen without straining your neck or shoulders. This may require that you elevate your laptop above the desk or work surface. In a tight spot, a phone book might give just enough lift.

A mini keyboard, a monitor shelf, and adjustable lumbar support can provide every laptop user with the tools necessary to maintain good posture. These three things can provide the tools for a more comfortable, productive laptop experience.
